Top 5 Tips to Prepare for You Graduation Session from a Chicago Photographer

Hey, everyone! I'm back, and after 2.5 years of radio silence, you get not one but two blog posts in a single week. 😂 Graduation season is right around the corner, and I know you're all gearing up to capture some amazing photos to celebrate your incredible achievement. So, I wanted to drop some tips to make sure your session goes off without a hitch.

If you've ever been one of my clients, you know I'm all about preparation. Whether it's knowing the best practices leading up to a shoot, helping you decide on the perfect look, or choosing the ideal location, being fully prepared is key to nailing that perfect shot.

  1. Find the Right Photographer: This goes for all kinds of photography. Find someone whose work you love and who you feel confident in. Just like most newborn photographers aren't necessarily equipped to photograph your wedding, a landscape photographer might struggle through your graduation session. Hiring a photographer you trust allows you to relax and just go with the flow during your session instead of being concerned with every detail and pose. Choose a photographer you trust, especially one experienced in graduation sessions. Sure, it might cost a bit more, but trust me, it's worth every penny to have peace of mind and killer photos.

2. Know When You'll Have Your Cap, Gown, and Tassel When Choosing the Date: Don't schedule your session until you've got your cap, gown, and tassel in hand. I've seen it happen too many times where folks get so excited to book their shoot that they forget about the essentials. The last thing you want is to have to borrow one or buy a generic cap and gown from Amazon because it arrives too late. Plan ahead, make sure you've got all your gear sorted, and then pick a date that works for you. Remember, photographers often have quick turnaround times for your photos, so don't stress about scheduling too far in advance.

3. Dress to Impress: Yes, your cap and gown are important, but don't forget about what's underneath! But failing to wear a nice outfit underneath limits the photographer. Opt for something nice that reflects your personal style. Having a couple of outfit options will give your photos more variety and personality.

4. Explore Your Options: Now I might be biased, but I truly believe Chicago has some of the most amazing photoshoot locations. There are so many places to choose from. While campus shots are classic, don't limit yourself. Get creative and choose a location that speaks to you, whether it's the iconic skyline or picturesque parks.

5. Beauty Prep Matters: Guys, gals, everyone—make sure you're looking your best. Get that haircut, style your hair, and consider getting your makeup and nails done (or at least polishing them yourself). I know these are extra expenses, but this is a special occasion. These small touches go a long way in the final product of your photos. If you want to love your photos even more, just book the appointment.
